This panorama, photographed by James Blakeway, captures The University of Iowa Hawkeyes taking on the University of Pittsburgh Panthers for a thrilling night of football. The image depicts Hawkeye fans showing their team spirit by “striping” historic Kinnick Stadium in the traditional black and gold Iowan colors. Hawkeye football began in 1872, when it was first played as an intramural game against other local colleges. It wasn’t until 1889 that a competitive varsity team was first recognized. In 1899, Iowa completed its first undefeated season, which led to an invitation to join the Western Conference, known to college football fans today as the Big 10 Conference.
